The legalization of sports betting in the US is growing throughout each state, as seen in recent gambling news. The offerings vary: some states allow for brick-and-mortar operators to offer sports betting, while some offer online and mobile wagering as well. Some accept all sports, while some prohibit amateur sports. Of course, most bookie pay per head providers offer a lot more since the players come from all over the world.
In the case of the US, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo included the legalization of sports betting in the budget plan for the state. This was revealed in the 2019 State of the State Address last Tuesday, where Gov. Cuomo says that sports betting is now here, especially after the PASPA repeal of the Supreme Court last year. New York is one of the states who has been pushing for the legalization of sports betting for years.
Sports Betting in New York: Futures
Since 2013, there is a legislation that authorizes the development of 4 commercial casinos. The legislation allows sports betting upon the amendment in federal law. These casinos have deals pending with operators and are ready to open sports betting. Governor Cuomo is very open to start authorizing sports betting in these casinos. This, he says can “help generate activity” – especially because these casinos are finding it hard to meet their revenue goals.
The state also has tribal casinos, and if the law passes, they should also be given permission to offer sports betting. This is through the tribal compacts that will ensure that these casinos will be able to compete equally with other commercial casinos.
As for online and mobile sports wagering, Cuomo thinks that there is no way it can happen unless they change the constitution of New York. To do so requires a voter referendum. So far, there are no new laws that have passed, and the New York Gaming Commission is still working on betting regulations to be made.
