On May 6, a championship fight will occur between Naoya Inoue and Luis Nery in Japan. Inoue will defend his undisputed super bantamweight title against Nery. Also, Top Rank announced the Naoya Inoue vs Luis Nery fight last month. However, they made the announcement again for unknown reasons.
It’s possible that Top Rank assumed that because Inoue selected Nery—a fighter who had just been knocked out—American spectators wouldn’t be enthusiastic about the bout. Inoue should not be fighting this guy if he hopes to entice American fans to his May 6th show.
People who bet on sports in the US would gladly wake up at 4:00 AM to watch it if Inoue and Luis Alberto Lopez were cast together.
Naoya Inoue vs Luis Nery
Top Rank says this is “the biggest boxing event” Japan has ever witnessed. No one seems to know why. In 2021, Brandon Figueroa has previously knocked out Nery.
There are a few respectable bouts on the May 6 undercard, but nothing spectacular enough to warrant the “biggest boxing event” moniker in Japan’s history.
“Monster” Inoue’s decision to remain at 122 pounds rather than fight Luis Alberto Lopez, Raymond Ford, Rey Vargas, and Robeisy Ramirez at 126 pounds is understandable, given the difficulty of his previous bout. Also, if the Monster wins, you can use a player prop bet builder to wager on his next opponent after Nery.
