Lee Westwood is the latest LIV Golf star to call the Official World Golf Ranking obsolete. It came after he found himself at the lowest rank in his career. Despite signing a lucrative deal with LIV Golf, the OWGR does not recognize the Saudi-backed golf circuit.
After a brief reign atop the global rankings, former No. 1 Westwood is now in a very different place, wallowing at 875th. Also, he faces the prospect of dropping out of the top 1,000 in the coming months.
In Westwood’s opinion, the present ranking system is hopeless due to the steadily declining status of LIV players and the decreasing number of LIV players who get berths at golf’s four major tournaments.
According to sportsbook pay per head forums, Westwood is not the only one criticizing OWGR. Last week, another LIV star, Louis Oosthuizen, voiced his displeasure with the system. Since his ranking decline disqualified him from competing, Oosthuizen will not be able to play in the Masters Tournament this April, his first absence since 2008.
Official World Golf Ranking Obsolete
The South African thinks the present global ranking system needs a whole revamp. According to the best bookie pay per head, he is among other LIV players, like Westwood, who will not play at Augusta National this spring.
Another LIV star who has recently been outspokenly critical of the OWGR system is Joaquin Niemann, who, in January, called the current ranking “unfair” and is a former PGA Tour standout. According to sports betting experts, the Chilean has been playing on the DP World Tour, the Asian Tour, and the PGA Tour of Australasia to get into the majors.
The victory in the Australian Open in December secured Niemann’s berth in this year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon, so it was not without its reward. This past month, he made a triumphant comeback to the DP World Tour in pursuit of further ranking points. His efforts were partially rewarded as he tied for fourth place at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Augusta National recognized Niemann’s recent outstanding play with a special exemption invitation. Thus, he is entitled to attend this year’s Masters even though his absence from LIV was insufficient to propel him into the top 50 in the world.
