LIV Golf is no longer pursuing its members’ OWGR rankings. Since the league’s inception in 2022, LIV has wanted to be included in the world ranking points. However, it looks like the league changed its perspective and no longer sees the need to be part of the rankings.
LIV Commissioner Greg Norman said that the credibility, integrity, and accuracy of the OWGR rankings no longer exist. Just a few months ago, the OWGR rejected LIV’s most recent bid, suggesting that getting to points may be a long process and require a format change. After some time since the OWGR turned them down, LIV has decided to turn them down again.
It was made quite apparent in Norman’s letter that even if LIV were to receive points shortly, his players’ rankings would make their strengths of field appear much weaker than they are. Points are not immediately accessible, nonetheless. When it comes to this conversation, they do not have much sway. However, LIV relies on the fact that it can still exclude its top players from major tournaments as leverage in this endeavor. Since then, LIV has spoken up. Everyone is betting on Norman and his crew. Additionally, they demonstrate behaviors that indicate they will gladly destroy golf establishments if unsatisfied.
LIV Golf Does Not Pursue OWGR Rankings
There is no single LIV top pro whose performance belies his global ranking; this is common knowledge among golf fans. At OWGR No.76, Joaquin Niemann remains one of the world’s hottest players. With his recent slump to 182, Bryson DeChambeau may not be a serious contender at any of the majors this year. Like Talor Gooch (No. 476) and Dustin Johnson (No. 266), they have also fallen. So now you see the boat. Were golfers willing to take this chance by abandoning LIV? Yes. Are there reasonable delays in earning points because LIV is new and has a different format? Yes. No one disputes that the rankings do not reflect reality, not even PGA Tour pros.
Moreover, although some golf fans like seeing LIV defectors eliminated from major tournaments, most would witness the best professionals compete on the most prestigious platforms instead. Since the majors have used the OWGR to fill their fields for a long time, it is still the most meaningful rating system in golf. The dependence on the best fields and OWGR is now at odds with one another. Opting out is not an option. Part of Norman’s wager is that the OWGR will require LIV more frequently than the reverse.
