State lawmakers are discussing a comprehensive gambling bill that includes legalizing Connecticut sports betting. However, the Connecticut Jobs and Revenue Act has already met some resistance from the Native American tribes.
The proposed bill included legalization of sports betting and online gambling. In addition, it includes a new tribal casino in Bridgeport. The Pequot and Mohegan tribes will operate the new casino, as well as other entertainment facilities in three other cities.
The governor gave an alternative proposal that requires the two tribal nations to scrap their plans to construct a casino in East Windsor. In return, they will have exclusive rights to online betting and the new tribal casino in Bridgeport.
Future of Connecticut Sports Betting
A spokesperson for the tribes told gambling directory sites that they have no interest in letting go of the East Windsor casino project. In fact, they already invested $20 million on the casino. Tribal leaders initially were in favor of the plan. However, they withdrew their support after the governor’s proposal.
In addition, the proposed bill will add a new ten percent tax on table games. Also, online betting will have a tax rate of 10 percent. Connecticut sports betting tax rate will be eight percent. Becoming a bookie in the state will be limited to the tribes.
Governor Ned Lamont said he was unconvinced about the proposal. Also, he is concerned about MGM, which has plans to have a casino in Bridgeport. Senator Cathy Osten told gambling software experts that she wants to hold a special session to discuss the issue.
Governor Lamont’s alternative plan only became public after Senator Osten filed the Connecticut Jobs and Revenue Act. The proposed bill will require tribes to spend at least $100 million on the $300 million casino project in Bridgeport. In return, the tribes can accept FC Seoul betting and other sports bets in their casinos and through online apps.
