Basketball Betting Guide: The Types of Bets

Later on, we’ll give you more tips and tricks to develop the best basketball betting strategy. For now, study the different types of wagers you can place in basketball.

Point Spread

The point spread is the most common bet, and is easily identifiable with the + and – signs before a number. In this case, Team A is -7, and Team B is +7. You bet based on by how many points the team will win with. Team A is the favorite to win, because of the – in front of it. It means, Team A has to win by more than 7 points to win your Team A bet. Team B, meanwhile, is the underdog. If Team B loses by 6 or less points, you win if you bet on team B.

Betting Totals

Totals are basically betting Over or Under the total combined points of each team in a specific game. This wager is available not just with basketball, but with other sports as well.

Moneyline Bets

Moneyline bets are also a type of bet you make when you bet on who you think will be winning the game. But this time, the score does not matter. The difference, is the payout. So if Team A is the favorite, then you get paid less money on a winning bet. However, if you bet on Team B, the underdog, and they win, you get a bigger payout.

Specials

Prop Bets

Lastly, you have the props, or the specials. These are very specific wagers that require knowledge on your part. For example, a bet can be: Will KD get more than three blocks in this game? These are bets that are usually not directly related to the outcome of a game, so it can be about a player’s performance, or the number of games for the finals. You can also bet on the awards, such as rookie of the year, or the number of fouls in a game or in a quarter. These bets are fun to wager on, but again, you have to know the teams well to make an informed bet on these.
