Washington DC was ready for sports betting as early as last year. They already had a law in place that provides the details on the implementation. They have rules on oversight, operations, and taxes. Unfortunately, the law in question is full of controversy. Mostly because the contract the state has is with the very dubitable Intralot. It came to a point where a lawsuit was filed by a resident to dispute the alleged unfair practice of awarding a contract without any opportunity for bidding.
Sports betting is a very competitive industry, which is why a lot of betting software companies are offering customized services to get a step ahead. These pay per head software providers can help bookies manage sportsbooks and turn in a profit on online gambling.
Washington DC Politics
Given the controversy surrounding the sports betting bill, any efforts to resolve the issue are just causing more delays – over a year, in fact. And all of the issues seem to center on a particular councilman, Jack Evans. But it seems that even his fellow council members are fed up over the issues Evans has been bringing into their office. All other councilmen voted out Evans from the council. The main reason stated is due to possible ethics violations, among other things.
Hopefully, with Evans’ ouster, the council can somehow recover its reputation. With his expulsion, the council can move on and start from scratch. Sepcifically, on the matter of sports betting. A formal vote will happen on December 17 to finalize the issue. DC can now restart the process of coming up with legislation on sports betting. Hopefully, this will also allow operators a fair opportunity to bid for the license to operate in DC. But for now, it seems that the majority of sportsbooks that you will find in bookie pay per head directory listings are unaffected. As for the residents, they will have to travel to nearby states that offer sports betting if they want to place wagers for now.
