Sports Betting in California is Still Uncertain

Sports Betting in California is Still Uncertain

Sports betting across the country has definitely grown over the past couple of years. Some states were quick to embrace sports betting fully by allowing both retail and online wagering instantly. Other states began with retail betting, but have later on added mobile sports betting. Some states are still studying their options, but are open to the industry. But some states remain outside the gambling world, and California is one of them. Up until now, sports betting in California is chaotic, with many lawsuits in place.

The latest of these lawsuits come from two California card rooms. They are trying to block a ballot question for this November’s elections. The ballot in question will ask if residents want sports betting, craps, and roulette in tribal casinos. According to these card rooms, the ballot question is in violation of a constitutional mandate where only one subject can be included in ballot questions.

Sports Betting in California: Will it Ever Happen?

Sports Betting in California is Still UncertainCurrently, tribal casinos in California may only offer card games, lottery games, and slots. If the voters elect Yes to the ballot question, then table games as well as in-person sports betting can now be offered in tribal casinos. This lawsuit and vote, however, has no mention of online wagering. The reality is, the use of the best sports betting software can generate profits for both sportsbooks and the state, if they only choose to allow it.

Currently, there are online bookmakers who offer sports betting services similar to a sportsbook pay per head who are working on this. This initiative aims to legalize online sports betting throughout the state, but through a partnership with tribal casinos. Petitioners have until June to collect enough signatures to put this in the ballot. California has 40 million residents, twice as much as California. Given how popular online sports betting is in New York, we would not be surprised to see similar, or even double the numbers if California were to allow online sports betting.
