Legalized Sports Betting in the US Continued to Grow in 2023

Legalized sports betting in the US continued its expansion in 2023. There were issues with sports betting, including NFL player suspensions for gambling violations.

Sports betting is now legal in six states, thanks to bills or regulations allowing sportsbooks to take wagers. US Supreme Court allowed Florida to resume sports betting after a 2-year legal battle.

The two most populous states in the country, California and Texas, are still not part of the group. Despite substantial obstacles, sports betting advocates in both states hope to make headway in 2024.

Following the failure of two competing initiatives in 2022—one of which had financial backing from Native American tribes—to allow sports betting in California, it appears that no action was taken this year to accomplish the same. An attorney from California specializing in sports betting, Baird Fogel, stated that obtaining the complete backing of the tribes is crucial.

According to Fogel, Connecticut and New Jersey could strike agreements because those governments had previously worked with the tribal casinos to open a betting business in their states. According to Fogel, a comparable agreement in California may be achieved through income share.

A possible years-long game awaits any effort to legalize casino gambling in Texas. Those in favor have donated millions of dollars to political action organizations. The 2022 campaign of Republican Governor Greg Abbott received a $1 million contribution from casino mogul Miriam Adelson, who had already agreed to purchase the NBA team, the Dallas Mavericks, in November.

Legislative opposition to authorizing casinos remains robust, meaning gaming legislation has only gradually gained support. Despite a spending spree, no Texas-sized prize has yet to be delivered. A resolution endorsed by the Texas Republican Party reaffirmed party activists’ stance against gambling in casinos.

Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has been the biggest roadblock thus far since he controls the state Senate and has tremendous influence over which proposals ever reach a vote. Last spring, the House of Representatives approved a gambling bill to legalize mobile sports betting; however, the Senate never considered the issue.

In 2024, make sure you efficiently manage your sportsbook. Experts believe it will be another fruitful year for the sports betting industry.
