South Korean casinos are suffering from lower revenue due to the coronavirus. COVID-19 cases surged in recent weeks. Thus, authorities had to implement stricter safety protocols. According to reports, there were only ten available beds to treat coronavirus patients in the Seoul area. Accordingly, the government allocated $84 million to open more hospital beds in the country.
Casinos are feeling the pressure during the pandemic. Paradise Co Ltd. had to close Paradise City in Incheon after a restaurant staff member tested positive for the coronavirus. The gambling facility had to undergo disinfection before reopening its doors to the public.
According to sports betting sites, Paradise City will reopen on September 7, even if the government allowed it to resume its operations on September 3. The Korean casino operator said that they delayed the reopening as a pre-emptive measure to determine if other staff members would test positive during the period.
South Korean Casinos are Feeling the Pressure
Kangwon Land is a South Korean casino that accepts local and foreign guests. It will reopen on Monday, September 7, after temporarily shut down last February. The casino reopened its VIP lounge in May. However, it failed to attract guests based on online gambling reports.
Grand Korea Leisure reported poor results last week. The casino operator said that the sales of its casinos in the country were three times lower in August than the same month the previous year. It is not the only casino that suffered losses.
The MegaLuck Casino and Hotel Resort lost HK43.5 million in the first six months of the year. The Jeju Island casino closed earlier this year and has no plans of reopening any time soon. One of the reasons is that fewer flights are going to and from Jeju Island.
